Overview

Who We Are

Many people have a preconceived idea of how a therapy session will go. Some think they will sit across from the therapist and talk for 45 minutes and leave without any tools or skills to help them improve. Others think when they meet a new therapist, they expect to meet someone who doesn’t seem to be a real person they can connect with. We can promise you that you will find a warm, compassionate therapist who shows their personal side. We are committed to helping you reach your goals while enjoying the journey to the new you! Therapy can be an exciting process that allows you to grow in ways you may have never thought possible. We know calling a therapist can be scary, but we hope you will put yourself first and call and see how we can help.

What We Do

Life is too short to be consumed with anxiety, depression, or panic attacks. We want you to free yourself of any limiting beliefs, emotional pain and find joy, happiness, and peace in your day-to-day activities.
During our more than 20 years of providing therapy we have helped children, adolescents and adults learn new skills, feel validated, heard, and go on to live the life they were meant to live!

Certified HeartMath Practitioner

The HeartMath products, which many find similar to other forms of biofeedback provide a window into your body’s physiology. Using a simple finger sensor, the program objectively monitors your heart rhythms and displays the physiological level of coherence — an optimal state in which the heart, mind and emotions are operating in sync and in balance. The program combines emotional restructuring and relaxation techniques to assist your body in establishing a healthier response to stress. Patients who use these techniques report reduced stress and increased resiliency.

Advanced Training with Leading Experts

Mrs. Bohlander has trained with some of the leading experts in her field, including, Dr. John March, widely-published professor of psychiatry and chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center; Dr. Aureen Wagner, an international expert in the treatment of anxiety; Dr. Edward Hallowell, psychiatrist, author and pioneer in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); Rick Lavoie, learning disabilities champion, best-known for his video, How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop, which focuses on the frustration, anxiety and tension experienced by children with learning disabilities; and Dr. Ross Greene, clinical psychologist and author of the widely acclaimed book, The Explosive Child.
Summa Cum Laude Graduate
Mrs. Bohlander is a Magna Cum Laude graduate from North Carolina State University with a major in Polymer Chemistry; and a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Fairfield University with M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Internships

As part of her training, she interned at Amethyst House in New Haven, Connecticut. The facility is for women in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse. Their program includes a therapeutic nursery, addiction counseling and special “Watch, Wait and Wonder” sessions for building attachment between mothers and their children.
She also interned at The New Learning Center in Westport, Connecticut. Here, her responsibilities included individual, couple and family therapy sessions, plus co-leading social skills groups for those with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), including autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.

Janneta Bohlander & Associates

In September, 2005, Mrs. Bohlander created Janneta Bohlander & Associates, offering therapy services and support for children and adults, social skills groups, adoption support and school consultations. Her office is on East Avenue in Norwalk.

Her Experience in the Corporate World

Previous to her involvement in marriage and family counseling, Mrs. Bohlander worked for nearly fifteen years in the corporate world, as a financial consultant for Shearson Lehman Hutton in Greenwich, Connecticut; an account representative for British Telecom in New York City; and Director of Development, overseeing a global team of 40 individuals located in North America, UK, Italy and France, for Hyperion Software Corporation in Stamford, Connecticut. She was also an OnTrack consulting manager and Director of Enterprise Product Marketing for Hyperion, to name just a few positions that she held with that corporation.
Rising through the ranks at these different companies is what led Mrs. Bohlander to become interested in what makes people do what they do and what makes systems work, e.g., departments, families, relationships.
Before leaving the corporate world, Mrs. Bohlander worked as support staff at Project Return in Westport, Connecticut, while still working full-time for Hyperion. At Project Return, a progressive, therapeutic group home which serves as an intervention to prevent hospitalization, she participated in one-to-one discussions with residents, providing consistent support and direction, and joined in staff meetings. She also attended training sessions in Borderline Personality Disorders, Adolescent Violence and Eating Disorders.
After nine months, working at Project Return, Mrs. Bohlander made a life-changing decision to pursue a masters degree so that she could become a certified, licensed marriage and family therapist.
